Overview

Choose the right screen for your opening

The right screen depends on how the opening moves, the available fixing space, existing tracks, handles and daily use. Some insect screens stay fixed, while others retract when not in use.

Guide

Choosing screens by opening type

Start with the opening itself. Its movement usually determines which system is practical.

Windows

Fixed or removable window screens suit many window types where simple insect protection and airflow are needed. Pull-down screens may suit selected windows where the mesh should retract. Window style, frame depth and cleaning access need to be checked first.

Sliding and hinged doors

Sliding screen doors are planned around existing tracks, door travel and clear access. Hinged screen doors need enough swing space and suitable fixing points. For replacement screens, we also check whether the existing frame, handles or tracks have changed.

Bi-fold doors and wide openings

Pleated screens can suit bi-fold doors, patios, balconies and alfresco areas where a fixed screen would be impractical or visually heavy. The folded mesh slides across the opening and stacks away, helping keep wide openings usable when screening is not needed.

Higher-use entry doors

Safety screen doors may be considered where a more substantial frame, mesh system and greater everyday durability are preferred. They can suit frequently used entries that need airflow and visibility, subject to the doorway, frame condition and preferred appearance.

Why It Matters

Measured, supplied and installed by one team

01

Opening-specific checks

Measurements, squareness, tracks, thresholds, handles and fixing points are reviewed before ordering.

02

Frame and mesh planning

Frame colour, mesh choice and operation are selected around the opening, the home and how the screen will be used.

03

Installed and tested

After installation, movement and closure are checked so the screen operates as intended.

More to know about screen systems

These details help narrow the options before a site measure.

Fixed, retractable or safety screen systems

Fixed window screens are a simple option for many windows. Hinged or sliding screen doors suit everyday access where the frame and tracks allow it. Retractable and pleated systems can work for wide openings where the screen should store away. Pull-down screens may suit selected windows. Safety screen doors may suit frequently used entrances where a more substantial frame and mesh system is preferred.

Mesh, airflow and visibility

Mesh selection can affect insect protection, airflow, outward visibility, durability and appearance. The final mesh should be selected around the opening, frequency of use and the preferred appearance from inside and outside.

Replacement screens and existing openings

Existing frames, tracks or mesh can sometimes be replaced, but their condition and dimensions need to be checked first. Damaged mesh, worn frames, old sliding door screens, missing window screens and changes to handles, tracks or flooring can affect compatibility. Photos are useful before the site measure.

Simple care for everyday operation

Keep tracks and guides clear of dirt and debris. Use steady pressure when operating retractable screens, especially across wider openings. Clean mesh gently and avoid forcing a screen that feels stuck. Damaged mesh, loose fittings or rough movement should be checked early.

Google Review

We have three expanding insect screens in our house, on some very big spans and they're great. We are very happy with the product and service. Just note on such a big span there is some resistance on the mechanism and they require regular cleaning, but considering they retract into a tight bunch, it's absolutely worth it.
