Choosing a fly screen starts with the opening you want to use. A bedroom window opened for fresh air has different requirements from a wide doorway linking the kitchen to the garden. Before comparing colours or mesh, consider how the window or door moves, whether you want to move the screen aside, and how often you need access through the opening.
SK Screens & Blinds offers fixed, pull-down and pleated window screens, plus pleated retractable systems for suitable doorways and wider openings. Here is how their operation differs and what that means for your choice.
Fixed screens: mesh that stays across the opening
A fixed window screen keeps flat mesh in position across the opening. There is no daily extending or retracting step: the mesh stays there when the window is open or closed. This can be a practical starting point when you want routine insect screening and do not need to clear the opening during everyday use.
The frame still needs to suit the window. Handles, winders, the direction of opening and access for cleaning all deserve attention. If you are replacing an existing screen, its frame condition and fit should be assessed rather than assuming that replacing the mesh alone will address every issue.
Pull-down screens: vertical operation with storage above
A pull-down window screen uses flat mesh that moves vertically in side guides. Lower it to cover the opening and raise it into the compact housing above when you want the screen out of view. This gives you the choice of having mesh across the window or clearing it without treating the screen as a fixed panel.
The available space for the top housing and side guides matters. So does your ability to comfortably reach and operate the screen. A suitable window style, clear fixing space and compatible handles need to be confirmed during a measure.
Pleated screens: mesh that folds to the side
Pleated mesh has an accordion-style form. Move the handle horizontally to extend it across the opening, then move it back to gather the folds at the side. This is the operation of our pleated retractable screens; the mesh folds beside the opening rather than rolling into a cassette.
Pleated systems can be assessed for selected windows and for door applications such as bi-fold, French, sliding and stacker doors. Their suitability depends on the available mounting space, tracks, threshold, handles and movement of the existing opening. A screen shown on a similar-looking door is a useful reference, but it does not confirm the fit for yours.

Match the operation to your daily routine
Imagine a sliding bedroom window where you usually leave insect mesh in place. A fixed screen may meet that routine, subject to the frame and opening checks. If you regularly want the mesh out of view, a pull-down or pleated option gives you a different way to use the window.
For an alfresco doorway, think about where people normally walk and how the doors are arranged when open. A pleated screen may be worth assessing when you want screening across the opening and the ability to gather it aside. The doorway layout will help determine the configuration.
What to show us before a measure
- A photo of the full opening and surrounding frame.
- The window or door open, showing its movement and handles.
- Any existing screen, track, winder or fitting you want to discuss.
- Whether you want the mesh to remain in place or retract during use.
Common questions
Is one type best for every window?
The useful comparison is between the options that fit your opening and routine. Frame condition, fixing points and clearances can narrow the choice before appearance is considered.
Can I use different screen types around my home?
Discuss each opening separately. You may prefer mesh that stays in place in one room and retracts in another; a measure helps establish which configurations are suitable.
What affects the quote?
Quantity, opening dimensions, screen configuration, frame and mesh choices, and installation access all matter. A quote should identify the system being supplied and the installation scope.
