Fly Screen Mesh

This is the simplest way to keep flying insects out of the home. Screens cover the otherwise open windows, allowing light an air through. But the insects stay outside.

Australia doesn’t do too badly with insects, as there is no real risk of malaria or other diseases. But for the sake of convenience it is best to keep insects outside.

Retractable Fly Screens

We may not need fly screens all the year round. So some fly-screens are made either detachable, or retractable.

Detachable fly screens are might be set in a frame, which might be removed at the end of Summer. Or detachable screens might be magnetic. These prove convenient for storage because they can be rolled up and keep in a small space.

Retractable screens are simple to use and reliable. The screen recoils into a overhead storage cassette. When not in use you will hardly notice it is there

Fly Screen Security Doors

These serve so many functions. Of course the fly screen mesh keeps insects out. And by having a screen door we can keep the air circulating through the home during hot weather. Best of all these doors are lockable and very secure, so we keep any potential intruders away simply by locking he door. And when using a locked security door w can still keep fresh air circulating inside.

What we can do for Home Window

We can cover our windows in a variety of ways. we can use blinds, curtains, fly screen and protective film to perform several useful functions. and there is no reason not to have several of these coverings.

UV light

Standard window glass will block most UV, but not all. We can block almost all the UV light with tinted or clear window film. this prevents furnishings, floors and other items inside the house form fading in sunlight.

Australia does have insect problems during some parts of the year. It is easy to keep these insect out of the home with fly screen mesh on the windows.

A retractable Fly Screen Frame allows us to use the fly screen mesh when needed, and neatly remove or retract it at other times.

Window Blinds

Window blinds provide privacy during both the day or night. And they can block bright light when needed. Various models of blind will allow you to adjust the amount of light that comes through the window. So you can still make use of the outside light (saving on energy bills) and keep some privacy.

Blinds can be fitted inside or outside the window.

Fly Screens Sydney

Australia has to deal with insects for at least a few months of the year. But it is not too difficult to keep these pests out of the house by installing fly screens frame windows and fly screen doors. Once installed these will function effectively without any issues; you will hardly notice that they are there. And if you have security doors with fly screens you will keep out potential thieves as well.

Fly Screen Doors

Older fly screen doors of a generation ago consisted of a flimsy frame fitted with fly screen mesh. Newer styles are security doors, which have solid frames and thick fly screen mesh that will prevent unwanted intruders from entering the home. Best of all these security doors look attractive, so they can be part of the decor as well as practical.

Security doors allow you to circulate air throughout the home during warmer months, while still keeping pests and criminals out. Older fly screen doors could allow air circulation and keep insects out, but you couldn’t use them for security protection. New security doors can be locked as you leave the house, and still allows both air circulation and protection.

Retractable Fly Screens

Retractable fly screens can be easily put into place during the insect season, and either removed for storage or neatly rolled out of the way.

Flyscreens allow for fresh air from outside while still keeping insects out. Strong mesh on windows also provides additional protection, preventing children from falling out of windows.

Window Blinds are also a fine option if you need air circulation, but they will only let a moderate amount of light in. And they probably won’t do much to prevent insects.

Window Blinds

It is not difficult to find the right style of blind for your windows. Order online and have the blinds custom-made for your home. It’s never been easier.

Maintaining Retractable Fly Screens Sydney
Security screen doors are easy to open from the inside, but strongly secured against outside intruders. They let natural light in and allow the air to circulate. They also can be made to complement the décor of your home. These are reason enough to invest in a good fly screen door or retractable window screen.

Older Sliding Fly Screens Doors Sydney
Occasionally a sliding screen suffers damage or needs a little maintenance, though this is rare.
One occasional issue is a sliding door coming off its tracks. This may occur because the unlocked door receives a heavy impact. Obviously the door needs to be repositioned onto the tracks, but the tracks should be cleaned first. Then the door should be reinserted into the tracks at an angle. Align the tracks and the rollers on the door, then angle the opposite edge of the door away from the frame. At the correct angle the door should comfortably slot in.

In some cases the rollers of the sliding door will need to be adjusted. You can often raise the height with a screwdriver, and this can help put the rollers back on track. But remember to readjust the roller height after the door is working again. If the door height is wrong the security lock and latch may not correctly align, and the door will not lock.

Modern Doors and Retractable Fly Screens
Our modern design fly screen doors, which can be retracted by sliding or by pleated design, will not need adjustment under normal circumstances. The use of enclosed guide channels prevents any malfunction in the mechanism, so repairs will only be required in the event of a severe accident.

Advantages of Fly Screen Security Doors

Fly Screen security doors Advantages

  • Security – Probably the whole reason for purchasing a security door. The door is your first line of defence against intruders. Anybody intending to break into the house will try the door first, followed by the window. A metal security door is as strong as any front door can be, being considerably better than a standard wooden door.

Security doors are designed so that the hinges and joints cannot be accessed while the door is closed. There is no way to remove the door, and no easy way to cut through it, not without creating a lot of attention.

Security doors lock at several points, which is another way they remain unmovable.

  • Privacy – the heavy mesh on a security door acts like a two way mirror. It is easy to get a reasonable view outside, but outsiders find it difficult to see inside unless they are very close.
  • Remove insects. This is the original point of flyscreen doors, and security doors have not neglected this original fundamental purpose. Even the smallest flying insects will not get through steel mesh. And if the door has a rubber flap across the base then even ants cannot get through.
  • Natural light. By keeping the security door in place you can let natural daylight in, saving money on internal light which uses electrical power.
  • Allow the breeze through home. On a moderate day the breeze can keep the home cool. On a very hot day the door is closed so the air conditioner can be used.
  • Style. With the range of available security doors there will be one to suit your home.

Have peace of mind with a fly screen security door on your home. Back doors and other entrances will also benefit from a security door.

Cleaning Metalwork

Fly screen Doors

Modern fly screen mesh and frames will resist corrosion under any reasonable conditions. They will also resist almost all stains. But they will require some cleaning, with sticky residue or some other substance occasionally presenting a problem.

Powered Coated Surface Fly Screen Frames

  • Surfaces can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment.
  • Wipe with a damp sponge
  • Use a mild detergent (pH neutral) and warm water to wipe done the surface. Using a soft brush (non-abrasive) is okay.
  • Rinse off thoroughly with clean water.

Avoid solvents on powder coated metal as they are likely to cause discolouration. Isopropyl alcohol will usually not cause any problems for cleaning powder coatings. Citrus cleaners (i.e.: De-Solve-It) are sometimes useable, but all cleaning products need to be thoroughly rinsed off the powdered surface.

Stainless Steel Fly Screen Doors Sydney

  • The door frame surface can be vacuumed with a soft vacuum attachment.
  • Wipe the door clean with mild dish soap and warm water.
  • A microfibre cloth is useful for cleaning metal.
  • Difficult grease can be removes with white spirit on a cloth.
  • Rinse the door with fresh water once the other cleaning is finished.

Fly Screen Doors

Security doors provide protection from both intruders and insects. They require little maintenance, and will last for decades.

Beneath Fly Screen Doors

Beneath Fly Screen Doors

The various rooms in a home may have different types of flooring. At the very least the bathroom will have a something different like tiles. Quite often the kitchen is different too. The space where one type of flooring meet another type of flooring will require a joint. This joint will be covered with a piece of edging material.

If there is a door on the room then the edging material will be beneath the door, or perhaps beneath the fly screen door.

Front and Back Doors

The entrances and exits in the home will also require a piece of edging material beneath the door. Sliding doors have this edging as part of the sliding mechanism. This includes retractable fly screens. Other doorways have the edging material beneath the main door or the fly screen frame

The edging strip may be made from timber or plastic, but metal is more common. The shape of the strip may accommodate a difference in flooring heights, because tiled floors tend to be a little higher than bare wood. The size of the strip may accommodate a larger gap between the two floor surfaces.

Water and moisture

An edging strip will not protect against moisture or water spills. The floor joints beneath the strip should be sealed with silicone. The edge strip is there to look neat and prevent the edges of the carpet, tile or timber floor from being damaged.

Security Doors and Retractable Fly Screens Sydney

A neat edging strip beneath the fly screen doors is part of the home design. Consider this when choosing a door and flooring materials.

Privacy, Rooms and Bedrooms

Uses for Window Blinds

Some rooms of the house can be open to the outside, other require privacy at least some of the time. Bedrooms need privacy for personal needs, and they need to block the outside light when people are sleeping. Home theatres and television rooms may also need to block outside light. Blinds are ideal for privacy and blocking light.

A window blind is such a simple concept. But it is also effective, and can designed to stylishly suit the room décor. A blind block outside light and allows privacy when closed. It allows light in when open, and often blinds can be set part open to provide reduced light in sunny conditions.

Individuals who want privacy while still allowing light in may consider adding window frosting or light (translucent) curtains behind the blinds.

Considerations for window Blinds

  • Does the room face onto the street, or another home? You will need privacy.
  • Will the Sun shine in the windows in the morning, or afternoon? Can you use this to your advantage?
  • Do you want to let the breeze through the window?
  • Shift workers benefit from blinds that block the light during the day.
  • Light blocking blinds are useful if the home uses a projector.
  • Does the house have outside shutters? These will also block light.
  • Blinds will help keep the home cooler in summer and warmer in winter, though thermal insulation and infrared film is more effective.

UV protection on windows, using UV film, is another possibility.

Which type of fly screen mesh to buy

Australia has had some of its hottest weather ever in the last few weeks. There are a few ways that homeowners deal with this. One is to lock themselves away behind shut doors and windows and run the air conditioning all day. Another is to take advantage of any breeze by leaving windows open. Unfortunately leaving windows completely open allows insects inside the home. And if there is anything worse than being too hot it is suffering insect bites when it is too hot.

Retractable Fly Screen Sydney

Screens should be on every window. They are the simple and effective means of keeping virtually any insect outside, all while letting the light and breeze though the home.

The question is which type of fly screen mesh to buy? Retractable fly screens certainly have advantages over a solid fly screen frame. The retractable or detachable models can be stored away in cold weather, or simply retracted into their overhead cartriage. There are several options here.

  • Pleated fly screens, rather like a blind when they fold up.
  • Magnetic fly screen frame attaches to any steel window. The same magnetic frame can be used on different windows at different times, depending which way the breeze blows.
  • Retractable fly screens simply roll up on top of the window.

Else, security screens are permanently fixed to the window. These prevent intruders coming in, and prevent children of the elderly from falling out.

Security fly screen doors provide protection for the house, while also allowing light in and air to circulate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Its summer again. And people who don’t already have flyscreens often consider installing them around this time. There are many options, including retractable fly screens, fixed screens, pleated screens and removable screens.

Frequently asked Questions about New Fly Screen Sydney

Do they block light?

Not really. Most screens hardly block any light. You will hardly notice any lighting effect from the flyscreens.

An exception to this is solar mesh, which is designed to block UV light. This prevents sunburn and prevents curtains and internal paint from fading.

Adding UV proof film to windows is a good option for preventing problems with the sun. These will not interfere with the Screens.

Will screens keep out every insect?

A standard screen will keep out medium and larger insect. If you have trouble with very tiny insects, like fruit flies, midges or small ants, then you might consider smaller mesh.

Fly screen mesh will keep insects from entering through windows and doors. But insects, especially crawling insects, might get into the house via other passages.

Are their issues with pets?

Occasionally some pets, especially younger kittens or dogs, will claw at the screens on doors. This will damage old style mesh. New steel or aluminium mesh will be far better at resisting these pet issues.

What about cleaning?

Stronger metal meshes and powder coated frames area easy to clean. Vacuuming is easy. And frames can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Microfiber cloths are good for cleaning window frames and security doors.

Clean Screens

Cleaning fly screen mesh

It is usually easier to clean a fly screen frame if you can first remove it from the window. Some fly screens are designed to easily detach. A few other screens can be removed with the use of a screwdriver or spanner. Occasionally some fly screen frames are permanently attached to the window, or are at least very difficult to remove.

  1. Be careful removing the screen. Older style mesh is easily damaged.
  2. Find an open workspace for cleaning the screens, somewhere that will tolerate water. Outdoors is idea. Put down some plastic sheeting or a tarpaulin to prevent damage to the screens
  3. Spray the screens with a hose, but do not use too much water pressure. Make sure to spray both sides.
  4. Make a mixture of one part ammonia to three parts water. Or, make some warm water with soap / detergent. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. Some people like to wear goggles to protect their eyes.
  5. Use soft bristle brush and ammonia solution to wash the screen. Leave the screen flat on the tarpaulin sheet, and scrub with a circular motion.
  6. After loosening any dirt and debris with the scrubbing you can wipe the surface with a sponge.
  7. Rinse the screen with a hose, and then shake off the loose water.
  8. Allow the screen to air dry. Prop it up so that the air can circulate around the mesh.
  9. Once dry, put the screen back on the window.

Regular Fly Screen Mesh Cleaning

Vacuum the screen mesh one a week to prevent dust form building up. A soft bristle attachment for a vacuum is a good option. Else, use a small hand held vacuum cleaner (i.e.: A Dustbuster)

Retractable Fly Screens Sydney

Retractable mesh screens require less cleaning as they can be stored away when not in use.

Mesh Fly Screen Sydney

Fly screen mesh was once fairly thin and fragile. It kept insects out while allowing light and air inside. But mesh and the functions it performs has developed over time. High end screen mesh is now used to keep human intruders out, providing security. It also works as a safety feature, preventing infants or pensioners from falling out windows.

Some types of screen are:

Perforated mesh

This is less of a mesh than it is a perforated sheet of solid metal. The ‘mesh’ effect is achieved by creating holes in an aluminium sheet. These holes are large enough to permit airflow, and moderate light, but small enough to keep out flying insects.

This works well in combination with a lighter screen. The diamond grill provides strength to keep the house secure. The lighter mesh keeps insects out. This diamond grill should be solid rather than criss-crossed bars of metal.

Polyester polypropylene

This is a common and inexpensive type of mesh screen. You will see this on many older windows and doors. It is fine for keeping insects out, as well as pets indoors. But it can be easily broken with brute force.

This screen will combine will with Diamond grill or decorative pattern grill.

Stainless Steel

A modern solution. This is rust proof under most circumstances, though it can be damaged in salty beach atmospheres. Modern stainless steel can be powered coated to give it a wide variety of colours.

Steel doors tend to be quite heavy.

An older alternative for metal door and mesh, but one that lasts quite well. Aluminium will not rust, unless exposed to salty or corrosive conditions. It tends to be the same matt silver colour, but it can be coloured through anodization.

Aluminium doors are quite light. But they are not always strong.

One good combination uses aluminium mesh and a stainless steel door. But it is not possible to weld these different metal together.
